Daily Astorian BUSINESS April
17, 1997 Kennel Specializes in pampering pets KARL MAASDAM - The Daily Astorian Bay Breeze Boarding in Warrenton gives dogs and cats all the creature comforts of home By C.V. HOLLANDER Of The Daily Astorian Because man's best friends deserve a little preferential treatment, a new kennel in Warrenton aims to pamper local pets. Muffy, a friendly shepherd mix, jumps on a small bed in one of Bay Breeze Boarding's "theme rooms" and settles in for a little television. Kennel manager Danielle Sayer pets the dog as she talks about a recent customer who came to the North Coast to stay in a bed and breakfast and wanted to set their dog up in similar style. So the pooch got to hang out on the furniture, check out the afternoon talk shows, and generally feel at home. " The theme rooms are really clicking," says Sayer, a Seaside High School graduate who returned to the area after working for 10 years grooming and boarding animals in California kennels. Bay Breeze Boarding, located at 1480 S.E. Ninth St., offers three theme rooms with beds, television sets, music and a comfy feel. But the spacious new building also boasts 37 regular dog runs fitted with heated, carpeted floors and privacy barriers. Potted plants, piped in music and running water help soothe frazzled nerves. The feline set, meanwhile, stay in "cat condos" with three levels and a window to gaze out of. Even human visitors can appreciate the high ceilings and skylights at the kennel, a labor of love for Sayer and her parents that was five years and more than half a million dollars in the making. Bay Breeze Boarding Inc., is owned by Sayer's parents, retired Columbia River bar pilot Capt. Stan Sayer and his wife, Marilou. The kennel is a pet retreat, its manager says: Animals receive constant supervision, lots of exercise, and the benefits of a state-of-the-art air exchange system. Before designing a pet-friendly kennel with local architect Robert Freeman, Danielle Sayer traveled to other facilities up and down the West Coast and kept track of elements that she liked. Sayer credits Freeman, contractor Bergerson Construction, and the Bank of Astoria with pro viding the financial and physical sup ports for the building. Friend Tiffany Gogenola is taking a leave of absence from work to help out. Just opened a few weeks ago, the place is already humming. "Did you guys see the iguana?" Sayer asks two visitors, referring to a reptilian guest that left that morning. Two stale cheese bagels, "bagel bones" supplied by a visitor passing through, sit on the front counter. Marilou Sayer takes a couple on a tour of the facility for potential dog sitting opportunities in the future. Muffy, meanwhile, is catching up on the soaps. Kennel hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Grooming services also come with a stay at Bay Breeze, with groomer Spring Osmer available 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Pick up and delivery are offered for grooming and boarding clients. For more information, call 861-9817 Printed by permission of the Daily Astorian
